Hello, I figured that I should post some sort of Journal as I head towards the Northeast Classic Bodybuilding contest. It may be interesting for some (maybe boring)  to see what we as amatuer bodybuilders must go through during our training as we prep for contest date. So, every now and then as I get closer to the contest date of May 13th, 2006 I will post information on my workouts, dieting and whatever else that may cross my mind.

10 weeks to go
Written by Administrator
A couple of weeks back I started back on Xenedrine EFX. You have to understand that I am an early bird and I hit teh gym at 4:00 a.m. so taking Xenedrine as soon as I wake up certainly gives me a boost to my workouts.

My workouts at this time have also been increased in intensity, going from 3 day split routines to a full fledged 6 day event. Each bodypart is now hit on it's own day with 3-4 exercise of 3-4 sets each. Cardio has been added as well but I am starting slow, with 20-30 minutes 4-5 days a week. As I get near the contest date I may increase so keeping track of my Body Fat and weight is crucial. Just an FYI, 2 weeks ago  I started at 168 and 8.2% BF...I am due for another measurement tomorrow (March 4th) so hopefully I will be on track. In the past I have managed to go into the lightweight category at 154 pounds but someone of my size at 5'8" should probaly be in the 160-164 pound range although I have done pretty well for myself in the lightweight category. I am trying a few things different this year to see if I can maintain muscle during this period and I will fill you in on the details at a later date.

9 weeks to go
Written by Administrator
Well I took my BF and it was good news, I was able to drop to 7.5% and maintain my current weight of 167. So I should be happy with that seeing my goal will be 3.5% at 160-164 pounds.

Last Sunday was also the start of posing lessons with WNBF Pro Nancy Andrews. Now, I already know how to pose but after the first lesson I realised how rusty I am as well as some tips that I may have forgotten. To be honest with you I wasn't ready for this first day, I thought most of it would be more of an introduction to posing but I was wrong and we (about 10 others) went straight into hitting our poses just as though we were on stage. I have to highly recommend that if you wish to do well and look as though you are prepared then committing yourself to something like taking lessons is a must have for good stage presence.

It is now Tuesday, two days later and I am still in pain...my calves and my quads still feel as though they had a rough outing. Tomorrow is my leg day and I may have to postpone that one more day for full muscle recovery to take place.

My eating habits are starting to stabilize. Right now my goal is to make sure I am getting enough protein in my diet as I drop carbs a bit and the easiest way for me to do that is to substitute my 2 protein bars during the day with 1 scoop of whey protein and 1/2 serving of almonds. Also, 3 nights a week my dinner is a large salad with Chicken, slice of light cheese and fat free dressing...the other 4 nights may consist of a can of tuna with one Whole Wheat wrap or...Chicken with 1 cup of cooked pasta...or even a Met-RX protein drink. Each week as I get nearer to competition day I will clean up my act a bit.

Until next week, see ya!

8 Weeks to go
Written by Administrator
Last week wasn't rough at all, I managed to get through all of my workouts without any issues but I will tell you one thing...you need sleep! I am trying to make it habit of going to bed at 9:00 and seeing I get up at 3:30 in the morning this still only 6 1/2 hours of sleep but that is all I need. On Tuesday's I like to stay up to watch my favorite show "House" and then the next day I suffer from lack of sleep. Even by using Xenedrine, I have a tough time making it through the day. As many Trainers and Bodybuilders will tell you, sleep is one of the most important thing you can do. Protein is synthesized during the night and at work rebuilding muscles, not enough sleep can have a negative effect in building muscles. So from now on I will either record "House" for later viewing and go to bed at 9:00 or simply make Wednesday mornings my day off and wake at 4:30 instead of 3:30.

Ok, so I did a Bodyfat check on Sunday Morning and was a bit shocked because I had lost 2 pounds but to my amazement it was 2 pounds of fat dropping my BF a full 1% to 6.8%! see the figure below from my measurements. The true test is coming in the next few weeks....this is where I see serious muscle coming off, something I have been trying to avoid all these years.

week 8 results

The one difference I am doing this year that I haven't done in the past is I am eating right after my workout which takes advantage of the oppurtunity to refill lost nutrients not only from workoing out but also from being in a "fasting" state during your sleeping hours. Normally I would wait until I got to work to have my first meal, breakfast. This is what my current regiment looks like:

3:30 - 4:00 Wakeup, take Creatine, maybe Gakic and Xenedrine. Oh yeah, and make wifes coffee
4:00 - 4:45 Workout (6 days a week)
4:45- 5:15 Cardio (currently 5 days a week, 25 minutes)
5:15 - 5:30 1 scoop Whey Protein with 1/2 cup Low Fat Yogurt, creatin, CLA, Multi-Vitamin
5:30 - 6:30 Get ready for work
6:30 - 7:00 Travel to work
7:00 - 7:30 Breakfast - 1/2 cup oatmeal - 1 scoop Protein
9:30 - Protein Bar
12:00 - 1 Cup Brown Rice - 5-6 ounces Chicken
3:00 - 1 Scoop of Whey Protein with water
4:00 - 1/2 servings of Almonds
5:00-6:00 - Train Client(s)
6:30 - Large Salad - 2 slices low fat cheese - 1/2 serving almonds - 5-6 ounces Chicken

And that is it, the diet will most likely remain this way unless I do not see any movements in BF%.

We had our second Posing lessons with WNBF Pro Nancy Andrews and although we focused a lot on calves and Quads and holding the tight, I have little or no pain like I had last weeks.

I will eventually add a comment section for those who would like to give me some words of encouragement or even if you have any questions about my current regiment.

7 Weeks to go
Written by Administrator
OK, so I lied last week...well sort of.. I said that after my posing classes with Nancy Andrews I was feeling no pain, well that was because I wrote my entry on Monday and didn't wait until Tuesday. Let me tell you that I have never had so much pain in my calves as I did on Tuesday! my calves felt as though I had sharp ridged rocks pack so hard in my muscles that they were bursting to come ripping through my skin!!

Well, I am writing on Tuesday of this week just to make sure that I do not lie anymore and I am glad to say that I have little soreness from Sunday's Posing class. Maybe my quads and calves are getting more conditioned or maybe because the class wasn't as intense as the week before, either way I am satisfied.

So I had my weekly weigh in Sunday morning and I am a bit depressed. I lost 2 pounds and most of that was muscle, this is exactly what I am trying to avoid (see my chart below).

chart

So with plenty of time left I will be adding slightly more protein and carbs to my diet without "spilling" over. For starters I will be adding another quarter cup of oatmeal to my morning breakfast along with an additional 1/2 scoop of protein. Remember, I workout in the morning so I feel that by supplementing my morning breakfast with more carbs and protein will be the safest time. And as silly as it sounds I will be adding another slice or low fat cheese to my low carb Salad and chicken at night, this will add a good ratio of carbs/protein/fat to help with getting additional protein into my system at night for muscle repair while I sleep. One more thing I just thought of that I haven't done yet is that starting tomorrow I will also be adding L-Glutamine to my supplement intake. L-Glutamine is one of the best supplements one can take for a number of reasons...especially if you are dieting. Some benefits include, Muscle growth, prevention of muscle breakdown and muscle cell volumization. It was probably one of the most important supplement behind creatine that a bodybuilder should take.

I am still holding strong with my workouts and cardio, getting through them with little or no problems but I must do one more thing to enhance that which I have let slip by me in the past few months. I must keep a Journal! to me, a journal is another important tool to use when working out. We all have our routines that we follow in the gym but without recording on a weekly basis, how do we remember what we did 2 months ago let alone (like in my case) what I did the week before! by recording your workouts (like I do with my clients) I can make sure that goals are met and that progress is made. So....I will be printing out my current workout sometime today and I will link to it for those who may be interested in seeing what I am up to.

Until next week, bust your ass and make those goals real!!!

6 Weeks to go and it is starting....
Written by Administrator
OK, so now it is starting.... I am crashing at 8:30 at night, feeling very tired. Most likely this is being caused by the lowering of carbs and also because of my 3:30 wake up time. The problem with going to bed too early is my bodies alarm clock gets all screwed up and I end up tossing and turning through the night. For example, I went to bed at 9:00 last night and for once I felt great....5 hours later at 2:30 a.m. I am wide awake and just waiting for my alarm clock to go off at 3:30. I did have a great chest workout and 25 minute cardio session but do not know what is in store for me tonight. My sleeping pattern is so whacked right now but I did notice one thing. Last Friday my wife met me for lunch and I had a large salad with steak tips, I slept great that night! it could be the lack of fats in my body or the carbs or maybe both??

Despite my lousy sleeping habits I did manage to do very well on my weigh in. I lost 1 pound of weight and almost all of it was fat! this is great news and hopefully it wasn't a fluke. I am going to continue with my current diet, workout and cardio sessions and hope the same will happen this week. Looking at records from exactly 2 years ago when I last competed, I am now 2 pounds heavier in muscle now than I was then....cool!! Although this is good news, it is only 1 week good news (Body fat wise) if I can do this 2 weeks in a row then I know I am on to something.

Posing class went well last Sunday but what a difference lighting makes. We (about a dozen of us) have our lessons in a well lit room, the problem with this is that you look so flat and disappointing. Nancy had us move into a different room the last half hour of or training to show us the difference in lighting. Amazing! we all look like we are almost contest ready and we still have 6 weeks left, I think it was a boost to our ego's if anything to finally see cuts and striations that we otherwise would not see in brighter light.

See ya next week!

5 Weeks to go, sleeping better!
Written by Administrator
So I am sleeping better but still not good enough. After I wrote last week, I had about 3 nights in a row of crappy sleep and 3 days in a row of very lethargic like days at work. But...once again, I slept great Saturday night because my wife and I went out Saturday night and I had grilled salmon and steak with rice pilaf, to my advantage the meals were very dry and contained little added oils. Not only that, my 3 year old Tyler slept over my brothers house....this allowed us to stay in bed a little longer than normal and I believe this has helped immensely. It is Tuesday now and I am still feeling pretty good, I am sure by Friday or Saturday the cycle will be starting over again.  During my posing class on Sunday, I was speaking to one of the guys who is taking the class as well and he said he is experiencing the same thing. So, I am happy I am not alone but I still believe that it shouldn't be this way.

More good news on my weigh in, I dropped to 5.6% (see chart below) and managed to have a good fat-to-muscle loss ratio. Overall since I started dieting in February, I have managed to lose 6.5 pounds with 1.5 of it being muscle...roughly a 4:1 ratio which can be considered a very good ratio.

results

If I can manage to continue at this pace I should be close in BF% that I was 2 years ago (3.8%) but I should be about 2 pounds of muscle heavier. This may not sound like much muscle but where I come in extremely lean, 2 pounds of extra muscle will only enhance my muscularity.

I have uploaded my current diet for anyone who has any interest in seeing precisely what I am eating. (http://www.2-fit.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=44&func=fileinfo&id=36)
I follow this regiment to a "T" for 4-5 days a week, the other days I may substitute a meal or two depending on my needs. It is all about knowing your body and how it functions during this period of dieting.

One more thing, I want my current clients to know that even though I feel like crap during the day, I..for some reason, perk right up when they come over for a training session or even a follow up assessment and I want to say "Hi" and thanks for your support, especially to Kathy and Stacey. My day goes by much more faster and enjoyable when I train with them at night.

Ok....time to eat now  :-)

4 Weeks to go, time is critical
Written by Administrator
Well, I went from sleeping very well last week to sleeping OK but feeling like crap during the day. I managed to go to sleep at 8:30 last night and I have to say that this being Thursday is the best I have felt in 3 days.

My weigh in on Sunday did not go as well as I expected and I was a bit disappointed. As you can see, my weight dropped over 2 pounds and the Body Fat did not change that much. It could have been just a bad morning to have a weigh in or it could be accurate. The fact that I felt real good during the week had me thinking that I may have gained weight...especially since I deviated from my diet a bit by having a delicious Pasta Salad that my wife whipped up for me. This meal was consistent for about 6 or 7 of my meals during the week and even though it was high in protein...maybe it wasn't high enough. So now I am back to what I was eating previously to see if I can get back on track.

Now despite having not done so well in dieting, I was told that I am looking real good by some of my fellow classmates during posing lessons. On the other hand and in my opinion, these same guys are looking tremendous and now I find out that if I do make the lightweight class...that they will be my competitors! I have to say that even the girls in this Posing class that I am taking are looking mighty fine...and ripped!!

Now that it is 4 weeks away from the contest, timing is really critical and I must make sure I do everything to a "T". No cheating, plenty of sleep and great workouts. Now I also have to get a few things ready as well so I am not last minute panicking. My posing suits still fit me well (I tried them this morning) so that is all set. I have to now get a hold of some "Pro Tan" which is an instant tan that you start applying 2 days before showtime and continue applying until you have about 4-6 coats on you...the darker you are the more defined you will appear. I must get my music routine put together by this weekend and start practicing it the next few weeks.  I will go into more details during my last week so you can see what we as bodybuilders must do to get ready for a show....it is crazy!!

Until next week....have a safe Holiday (Easter for some),

3 Weeks (and a few days) to go and I feel great!
Written by Administrator
I actually felt pretty awful most of last week, a bit week in the afternoon hours and crashing early at night at around 8:30. But....Easter Sunday was upon us and I decided that if my weigh in on Sunday morning allowed it, that I would enjoy myself. So my weigh in came in and I was right on target, I lost about 1 more pound and my BF was now under 5% (see below). Looking back to when I last competed 2 years ago I am 2 pounds heavier and at lower BF…this is also a sharp contrast from last weeks results which for me were a disappointment.

Anyway, I have to tell you what I ate for Easter. My breakfast and mid morning snack were the same but then came Lunch. Plenty of Turkey, white meat….good! and then it was downhill from there. Tons of stuffing, cranberry sauce, mash potato & gravy….2 servings worth piled onto my plate! Then I let my stomach settle down for about an hour and then I attacked the dessert table, 5 chocolate chip cookies, ½ of a 9 inch apple pie and a “very” large slice of soft doe chocolate chip pie...ohhhh, was this soooo good!! I had so much energy for the next few hours, I felt great! A little guilty but none the less I felt great. I guess the little guilt I had made me go out and work on digging some grass up for ½ hour straight non-stop for my son’s new playground set. Now it is Monday morning and guess what, I feel great!! I don’t know how much longer this Carb rush is going to last but I am taking advantage of it. Monday morning my chest workout was the best and strongest it has been in 4 weeks and doing 25 minutes of moderate paced cardio was a breeze. I will however, be toning it down a bit at lunch today. Instead of my usual rice and chicken, it will be a large Salad and Turkey (white meat of course). I do hope my carb rush will last until tomorrow, Leg day, because I would sure love to blast through them at least one more time without feeling so trashed after.  If all goes well for my weigh in on next Sunday…guess what, next Sunday is my Greek Orthodox Easter with my side of the family and I will be doing it all over again!!!

Well, it is now Tuesday and I feel about the same I did last week at this time. I was hoping to get my legs done today by energy level wasn't the greatest plus I woke up a bit late. Shoulders was todays routine and once I did wake up my energy level did as well, I added 25 minutes of cardio, had some time to do some ab work and now I am at work and ready to go. I do feel great, after all I just had my Oatmeal breakfast. Today I will also be ordering some self tanners plus some competition "Pro Tan" as well....you gotta look nice and dark under those lights on stage if you want to look your best!

See Ya,
Steve

2 Weeks and 4 days to go and still feeling pretty good
Written by Administrator

I do have my bad days and good days. Sleeping pattern has been off an on but one thing I can attest to is they have been very vivid and weird. Last night I woke up at about 2:30 from a dream about me trying to find a restroom to go pee, I had to pee really bad! then, I finally find one and there is a group of people around the urinal just drinking and smoking away...sort of like being at a bar with no walls for the restroom. I remember yelling "I cannot pee with everyone around me!" they just laughed and went on with their thing. So, I then wake up from my alarm clock at 3:30 (this is for real now) and I do have to go pee real bad but this time there was no one around me and I releived myself in solitude. I am sorry if you think that was a bit of an awkward story to read but these are the type of dreams I have been having.

Ok, so enough of that! Workouts have been strong, haven't lost any strength and have managed to complete them all. Cravings have been awful but when I think about it, I am not even hungry when I am craving....it is just one of those things, I know I can't have it and I want it and in order to be the best, I CAN'T have it. So I find means of trying to defeat that, sucking on a sugar free hard candy seems to work until one of my meals approaches. Drinking plenty of water is also helping as well, you wouldn't think so but it does the trick. And of course focusing on the main reason why you are doing this in the first place.....to win! If you invest all of your time, effort and money into something you really want shouldn't you dicipline yourself as well?

I don't have a screen capture of my latest BF results but it continues to do well. I am now at 4.75% and at 157.2 pounds just a little over 2 more pounds to go in order to be in the lightweight class. I have increased my cardio from 25 minutes to 30 minutes and from 5 days a week to 6. Also, I just purchased a bottle of "Charge" from Labrada products. This product increases your energy, decreases your appetite and increases the thermogenics in your body to produce fat loss. Will it work? probably as good as any product out there which isn't to say much but I bought mainly because of its 300 mg of caffeine. I am not a coffee or tea drinker so the added caffeine will give a great energy boost in the morning to get me through my workouts and also to get me through the work day when I take it right before lunch.  I will keep you posted on how this product works.

Next posting I hope to have some photos posted of myself to show how my progress has went so far. At 2 weeks away, what I post for pictures is pretty much who I will look on stage (minus the tanning). My goal has been since the beginning of this whole phase was to get to the high 3's for BF% and to be in the upper weight of my weight class and so far I am right on target!!!!

1 Week and 5 days left, feeling great and still on target!
Written by Administrator

Workouts have still been great for the most part, I have managed to maintain my strength through this whole ordeal. The only reason I mention this is because in the past my strength would diminish rapidly as I near the competition. The differences between this round of dieting and the past rounds are: I immediately have a protein shake right after my workouts (practicing what I preach), take CLA (a muscle sparing, fat burning "fat") and I think this is the most important factor....I get plenty of sleep! My energy levels have been for the most part, right there when I need them during my morning workouts.....there have been few exceptions but overall I would rate my intensity during this period excellent.

In the past I used to rate my physical ability during my work day, it was for the most part...horrendous, poor and very lethargic at times. This time around, it has been so much better....more energy, not so tired during the day, work habits haven't slowed down and I haven't been so grumpy at night even with a 3 year old son around!  Again, I have to attribute this to the reasons I gave above.

So, the last few Sundays I have been having cheat meals mainly because of the Easter Holidays and when I would weigh myself come Monday  I would be slightly higher in weight and also at the same time lower in BF%! This brings me to my next subject, carb loading.

My usual routine during my last week of preparation includes 3 days of carb depleting and 1 day of carb loading. I would carb deplete from 200 grams of carbs down to 100 grams of carbs then on Friday, the day before the show I would increase to 300 grams or 1.5 x my normal amount. this seems to work to an extent but what I have learned from my last show is that if I carb load 3x the amount from 200 to 600 that I am so ripped and my BF will drop a good 1/2 percent that it is just so unbelievable. Now I found this out by accident and a day late, during my last show in 2004 I cam in at 4.25%. During the competition day I kept a slow flow of simple sugars flowing through my body. When I got home that night my wife had my favorite desserts waiting for me, cheesecake and apple crisp and I ate the whole thing while watching TV in bed!!, the next day I expected to be bloated but I could be more wrong, I was friggin ripped to shreds.

So with that said and the fact that each Monday following my recent cheat days I have been looking more cut than the day before leads me to believe that I will need to increase my carbs not by 1.5x (or 300 carbs) but to 3X or 600 carbs, I may just drop it a bit to 500 carbs for the fear of what we call "spill over" which can have us looking too smooth.

So here are my BF results, the first chart shows where I was at this time 2 years ago during my last show and the second graphic is of course the most current. You will see that I have more muscle and less BF going into this show... a good thing.

And here are some photos from Sunday morning, with 2 weeks to go I do expect to be more cut come competition day from carb loading and using the right tanning supplies.

So there you go, a couple more reports left to go and I am golden!

See ya,
Steve

3 days left!!
Written by Administrator

Ok, so now starts this crazy ritual of carb depleting and carb loading...taking extra supplements, stopping certain foods and additives and so on and so on. At the moment I am still feeling great and I am looking just as good (If I don't mind saying myself). My BF is down to 4% and I will certainly attain my goal of 3.8% by Saturday morning. I have been keeping track of my BF measurements every morning and will post them in my very last post on this journal.

So here is what this crazy week is about:
On Monday I started a mild sodium load, I added more than normal salts to all of my foods as well as chose my diet to include foods that are high in sodium such as egg whites, salted almonds and beef jerky. Also started was a water intake load, my intake has probably close to doubled...I don't keep close track of how much water I take in but I do know that waking up 3 times in the middle of night to pee...sucks! A couple of reasons we do this, one- to trick the body into thinking that this is a normal ritual so that we do stop our water load, our skin will tend to shrink and tighten up some more and two, to flush out all toxins and to help the body function through this period.

On Tuesday I continued with the sodium load but I am now starting a carb depletion. I normally get roughly about 225 grams of carbs a day, I managed to drop that to approx 150 and supplemented that loss of carb with protein to keep the calories the same or slightly higher than usual. The water load is the same.

Wednesday is now here and the salt load has stopped, in matter of fact we now go into a salt deprivation mode. No salt, no spices, no foods that are high in sodium...all this to help the skin to tighten up (I think this is just theory but it seems to work). To help alleviate any issues with salt depletion, we supplement our intake with potassium to help the fluids in your body to maintain a steady balance. My carb depletion is now at 100 grams of carbs a day, this will continue for today (Wednesday) and Thursday. I do miss the flavor but there is only two days of this so I will survive.

Thursday will be the same as Wednesday's events.

Friday I will start a carb load, my regular 220 grams of carbs will jump to close to 500-600 grams. The protein will be dropped just a bit so the calorie will stay close to the same and you are still getting enough essential amino acids. The water in my case will be about half of what I am accustomed to. All this is done to now fill your depleted muscle cells with glycogen and what water you have in your body. This does work! it is amazing and I am looking forward to it. I have already stocked my shelves with sweet potatoes and high carb fruit and I will even throw in a carb bar or two. Your energy level will sore through the roof and come Saturday morning you will feel awesome and be looking the best you possibly can, you look more muscular, your skin is tight and your veins will pop out....it is all about timing and knowing how your body functions….lets hope I get it right!

Workouts: Full body workouts, nothing strenuous...12-20 reps of high reps. No legs are done after Monday so the muscle can begin to look separated.
Tanning: Wednesday is the last day of tanning, I personally will tan every day from Saturday on to get the darkest I can before applying 3 coats of Pro Tan (a tanning liquid) on Friday and Saturday.
Posing: Once in the morning – 15 to 20 minutes and once in the evening for 30 minutes

Final Results
Written by Administrator

Well no great news to report, only good news. I placed 4th in the Masters 40+ class out of 13 competitors. Not a bad showing but I knew I could have done better had my posing been on target. My wife Adelia took several pictures of me and when I viewed them I couldn't believe what I was looking at....I looked like an amateur! I wasn't prepared enough, I thought I was but apparently not. Oh well, live and learn.

My BF did drop to where I wanted it to as shown below, but I feel I could have been just a little more tighter. You will notice that I dropped quite a bit of water weight during the last few days, this extra water weight will generally be considered part of your "Lean body mass" this due part of the inaccuracy of a Caliper measurement. So even though I lost those pounds, I was still 4 pounds heaver than the last time I competed and just as lean.

As you can see from the photo below, there were quite a few of us on stage. It was hot, it was crowded and there were blinding lights. Instead of retyping what I have already entered in my Newsletter, I am asking you to please click this link and read on for more about how my evening went.
Newsletter The final results!

Thank you all for taking the time to read my Journal, I hope you have enjoyed the writings. I am by no means a prolific writer as many of you have probably already guessed but I just thought that it would be nice to share my experiences with the visitors of my site.

Kinds Regards,
Steve
